Best Multivitamins for Women

By If you are lucky enough to be among those 7% of women who never skip meals or never eat sweets for dinner, you wouldn't have to look for vitamin supplement. However, for 93 % of women supplements are great way to fill in what is missing in their diet, or even to prevent some diseases.
Furthermore, nowadays majority of women lead active lives. They have active jobs; they work out, run everyday errands... Having lifestyle like that a woman can't allow herself to run out of energy or to get ill. Good supplements with the proper vitamins, minerals and nutrients can help a modern woman to continue with her active and busy lifestyle, it can boost her energy level and improve her health.
Once you enter any drug store, you can notice an abundance of single vitamin and nutrient products. This raises a question: Why should one use multivitamins supplement rather than a single vitamin supplement?
One reason is that it is difficult to simply pinpoint a vitamin deficiency based barely on symptoms. Taking single vitamin or nutrient can also postpone a proper diagnosis. It is better to determine the best multivitamin for women, one that provides you with well-rounded nutrition and optimal health.
The other reason is that buying just one multivitamin product, rather then buying dozens of single vitamin products would save you a lot of money.
Generally, women should take multivitamins with added iron, since they lose iron while menstruating. Iron deficiency can lead to low energy or tendency to get ill. Women should also take minerals for bones such as calcium and folic acid. However, the best multivitamins for women changes through years and depends on woman's age, life stage and health.
Women in childbearing years should look to the future when choosing best multivitamins. For example taking calcium can prevent osteoporosis and bone loss later in life. Women in this life stage who intend to have children should also look for multivitamins with at least 400 mcg of folic acid, since folic acid prevents birth defects. I had already mentioned that, due to menstruating, women need vitamins that contain iron to replace it loss. This is especially important for women that have prolonged or heavy menstrual bleeding or those with menstrual disorders.
When it comes to pregnant women, they are in need for higher level of folic aid (at least 600 mcg daily), but they also need increased level of beta-carotene. As already mentioned it helps guard against birth defects.
While lactating, women's nutrition is mostly based on what is best for a baby; however, folic acid and beta-carotene are still needed.
Women in the postmenopausal stage are no longer menstruating, thus they are no longer in need for iron. Actually, some studies have found a link between high level of iron and heart disease. One more vitamin that women in this stage should be careful about is vitamin A. Anything above 100 RDA may contribute to fractures. In this stage beta-carotene is safer than vitamin A. In addition, multivitamins for senior women should contain vitamin B12, vitamin D and calcium.
There are a few things that a woman should keep in mind when choosing proper multivitamin.
Firstly, one should choose a supplement that offers close to 100 percent of the daily recommended value (RDA) for most of the essential nutrients. The exception is calcium- it isn't just possible to put 100 percent of your daily amount in just one pill.
Secondly, women should make sure that the supplement is formulated especially for women. It means that it contains the correct balance of nutrients, vitamins and minerals in order to support essential life functions and create a sense of balance.
Absorption rate can also affect the quality of multivitamin. Some supplements don't absorb well and end up just passing through our organism. This is another thing one should keep in mind.
Women should also be careful of labels and look for the content of supplement on it. Unfortunately, most multivitamins are packed with far more vitamins, minerals, herbs, other plants and animal substances (bee pollen, pine bark...) than the FDA (Federal Drug Administration) recommends. Some even contain dangerously high level of some substances.
One should also know that FDA in United States doesn't control the supplement history. Thus, you should make sure you are buying a supplement from a reputable company, known for its quality and integrity.
Finally, multivitamin supplements are great support for a modern and busy woman. But, since there is an abundance of such supplements on market nowadays, one should be careful while choosing the proper one.

Fertility Vitamins and Prenatal Vitamins

 By
Many women are either confused about what to look for in fertility vitamins or they don't see the need to take vitamins at all. Let me take some time to explain why vitamin supplements are necessary in order to increase your fertility as well as why prenatal vitamins are necessary prior to and during pregnancy for you and your unborn child. Most women don't get the vitamins and minerals needed from the food they eat from day to day. We would have to eat a whole lot of fruits, vegetables, meats, and grains in order to get the balance of vitamins and minerals that our bodies need to thrive and be our healthiest.
Women's vitamins are especially important when a woman is trying to conceive and during pregnancy. These are specifically called prenatal vitamins.
Prenatal vitamins supply a rich assortment of vitamins and minerals to help a woman conceive and bring forth a healthy baby. These vitamins and minerals are necessary to help keep our hormones balanced and our nervous system running smoothly as well as keeping all our organs functioning optimally.
Let me stress - We all need to take a multivitamin and multi mineral supplement to make up for what is lacking in the food we eat. Even the best diet in the world will not give you all the nutrients you need for your best chance at getting pregnant and bringing forth an optimally healthy child.
So what do you look for? What are the qualities of the best fertility vitamins and prenatal vitamin supplements?
Well, I'm no expert. But I can tell you what I took that helped me to be more fertile and energetic and have a trouble-free pregnancy. I looked into several prenatal vitamins before choosing what I believe to be the best multi vitamin supplement that's all natural and made from organically-grown plant compounds (see below). The other prenatal vitamins were synthetically made with artificial coloring.
I also ate lots of fruits and vegetables and drank a lot of purified water. (See my Preconception page for more on this.) Make sure your multivitamin has at least 400 mcg of folic acid (I took 800 mcg daily) in order to prevent neural tube defects in your unborn baby. This neural tube develops within the first month of life, so it's important to get enough folic acid before you get pregnant.
* Remember that even the best multi vitamin supplement won't replace eating a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, dairy products, grains, meats, and drinking lots of purified water. Both a healthy diet and a great multi vitamin supplement are needed to increase your fertility and ensure that you have a healthy pregnancy.
